We have made a number of alterations to this house over a period of twenty years. The latest was to knock down an extension that we built in 1985, (which was subsequently Listed) and to replace it with one that was larger and which had a garage underneath it. It took a year and a half to obtain Listed Building Consent and eleven months of this was to obtain consent to excavate within a metre of the tree roots (for the drive) Six days after the formal consent came through Thames Water dug a trench half a metre wide and two metres deep the whole way down the road which passed within half a metre of the tree itself, whose trunk still bears the scars of the digger.
